It is the season of Advent right now! Advent is the time before Christmas where the Church awaits for Christ to be born on Christmas day. It is great season of hope and excitement. I love this time of the year with all the Christmas carols we sing and the joy everyone seems to have. .

Traditionally advent is celebrated using an advent wreath where candles are places that represent a different weekly theme before Christmas. There are four weeks in total.

Santa Lucia

Last week Trinity was celebrating the Swedish Christian holiday of Santa Lucia. For those of you who do not know what/who “Santa Lucia” is, I will tell you. Santa Lucia is a young Christian lady who lived in the Roman Empire in what is now modern day Italy. She displayed great Christian character and eventually was martyred for her faith. According to tradition they tried to kill her first by fire, but miraculously that failed to kill her so they ended up killing her with a sword. Because of this she became regarded as a saint.

Swedes celebrate Santa Lucia by recognizing a young woman of outstanding character in the community. We used to do this in my small Swedish village in Minnesota. At Trinity we also do the same thing. We select a few freshman girls who we believe have excellent Christian character and from there a small group of people select miss Santa Lucia for the year. At the winter formal/Santa Lucia dance we find out who is selected. At Trinity the holiday of Santa Lucia is a fun time of celebrating Christian character and our past Scandinavian heritage.

Butterfly House

Last week while I was home in Minnesota, I took a visit to the Minnesota Science Museum. The museum has always been a favorite of mine since I was little. When I went this last time they had butterfly house exhibit with hundreds of butterfly. They also had a great IMAX movie on the butterflies. I was a lot of fun!

High School Musical

Last weekend I was able to go to my old high school musical yearly fall musical. I have so many found memories of being in the musical in high school. Some of my friends who used to be underclassman when I was in the musical and now the lead roles. It is strange to think it has been two years since I have been on that stage.

The musical they were performing this year was White Christmas. It was a very good show and enjoyable to watch. Director Dave always put on a good show even if he was so hard to work for. I am so glad that I was able to come home and see the show.

Back Home

This year I went home for Thanksgiving a little early. I flew to Minnesota yesterday and have really enjoyed my time here despite the snow. It is so nice to be with family during holidays. Today I was even able to go with my dad to church.

My dad and I went to Eagle Brook Church today. It is sorta like the Twin Cities version of Willow Creek Church in the Chicagoland area.

Study Week

This week before thanksgiving has been rather difficult for me. There are a lot of papers for me to write and a lot of tests for me to study for. As much as I love college life, I will we very thankful to go home for Thanksgiving and be with family.

Sometimes when I write a research paper, I get a pile of books on my desk like this.

Going Downtown

I went downtown last night to go see the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with some of my friends for a concert requirement in our class Music Appreciation. It was so fun to go downtown and so easy to get to from Trinity. All you have to do to get there is take the train. It makes me wonder why I don’t go down every weekend!

On the train going to downtown Chicago.
